OMDEC Spring Newsletter 2009

News:

OMDEC is now present in Australia as well!

To better serve this important part of the world we are now present in Australia as well. Over the last couple of years we were in constant contact with companies and customers all over this continent. But the time difference and distance made it difficult to respond quickly and meet on a regular basis. That is the reason we decided to have some people on the ground. You can find us in the Brisbane area.

Australia is very advanced especially in the Mining and Utility industry and we are sure our methodology and software can help and improve this even more.

OMDEC is part of the CIEAM program

One very important step for us is being part of the CIEAM program based at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT). CIEAM stands for “Cooperative Research Centre for Integrated Engineering Asset Management” . Prof. Joe Matthew is the Chief Executive Officer of this great CRC. Other participants are for example the Department of Defence, Rio Tinto Aluminium, Delta Electricity and SunWater. Together we are addressing industry problems such as: the ageing national engineering infrastructure issue, a general under-investment in asset maintenance, a reduction in the cost of maintenance and the total cost of engineering asset ownership and a new integrated asset management regime across all industry sectors. The broad outcome for CIEAM is to establish an Australian asset management environment that improves effectiveness and reduces annual costs of asset ownership, resulting in major economic benefit and the potential for significant commercial outcomes.

If you would like to learn more about CIEAM or even like to participate in the program as a company please contact us or Jane Davis under jane.davis@cieam.com and check their website www.cieam.com .

OMDEC listed cool vendor of Gartner's "Cool Vendors in Energy and Utilities, 2009"

The complete report is available at www.Gartner.com.

Publication Date: 11 March 2009, By Zarko Sumic, Keith Harrison and Kristian Steenstrup

About Gartner's Cool Vendor Selection Process

Gartner's listing does not constitute an exhaustive list of vendors in any given technology area, but rather is designed to highlight interesting, new and innovative vendors, products and services. Gartner disclaims all warranties, expressed or implied, with respect to this research, including any warranties of merchantability or fitness of a particular purpose. Gartner defines a cool vendor as a company that offers technologies or solutions that are: Innovative, enable users to do things they couldn't do before; Impactful, have, or will have, business impact (not just technology for the sake of technology); Intriguing, have caught Gartner's interest or curiosity in approximately the past six months.

LRCM (LivingRCM)

The OMDEC Living-Reliability offering is a result of 8 years of development and customer experiences. The solution includes a Data Mart, which is a gathering point for historical CMMS events, plus provides links to current CBM data. The Data Mart stores data in a prepared state for cost, failure, life expectancy, and condition analysis.  We are currently configuring LRCM to be the data source for Age/con, Perdec, SMS. OREST and other software products; each of these will then be able to be launched from LRCM.  The power OMDEC Living Reliability offers is the past ‘what happened’ and current knowledge is retrieved from multiple points almost seamlessly, updated continuously, and as a result analysis can be accomplished in a fraction of the time, reflect the most recent state of an asset, and present findings with greater accuracy than any system available today.

Please go to www.livingrcm.com to participate in discussions about it and learn more.

We have a new case study now as well : Municipal Electricity Utility:                                                                            Pilot Project on Use of Living RCM Software Module

In this Pilot Project, a Municipal Electricity Utility teamed with OMDEC to explore the value of Living RCM in actual operation using live client data. The LRCM module was quickly linked directly to the client’s CMMS, which contains valuable historical and current knowledge. With LRCM in live mode, the rich suite of analytical tools allowed LRCM users, with very limited training, to examine assets by class, location, or down to an individual component. Work tasks by year, month, top 10 bad actors, trends, reports showing corrective and emergency failures, a planning mode, and more can be accessed via the dashboard.  By integrating LRCM with the client data, the EXAKT decision support tool can be installed to predict equipment failure, estimate useful remaining life and achieve an optimal risk/cost/ reliability balance.  LRCM and EXAKT take the guesswork out of failure prediction, and provides a reliability analysis RCM program which is both affordable and easily managed.

The User’s Management team pronounced themselves very satisfied with the results and plan to proceed to a full roll-out of the project.

Please check our website under case studies for the whole case study or send Claudia@omdec.com an email!

We are pleased to announce that we have just signed an important new contract to supply EXAKT along with some consulting services to a large government department.  An important part of this contract will be to analyse the service tasks and service frequency of the department’s cars and light pick-up trucks with the specific objective of reducing the frequency of maintenance and the consumption of engine oil.  Maintenance Cost savings are the ultimate goal.  As soon as the results start to flow from this work, you can be sure we will pass them on to you.  There are so many organizations who can benefit from this methodology.

New version of SMS available – V1.4

The new version V1.4 of our SMS software used to optimize the stockholding of slow-moving spares according to 4 different criteria is available now.

There are new options implemented in SMS for cost calculations when dealing with non-repairable spares. The new options allow users to choose between emergency replacement and downtime when faced with the decision to replace a part. This has been implemented for both finite and infinite population cases, however in the finite case the option is implemented for constant arrival rate. The non-constant rate will be implemented in a future version.

In these times when customers are actively looking to save cash, SMS provides a direct way to attack over-stocking of high cost spares and release the cash back to the customer

Web training in SMS is available – just let us know.

Chris, our Sales Manager for the Americas (Chris@omdec.com), attended the 1st Annual “Asset Management for Energy and Utilities” Summit in Toronto, Ontario February 24th and 25th, where also Professor Andrew Jardine whom we work closely with was well received as a guest speaker.

Hydro companies from across Canada were represented by managers and engineers and lifecycle costing was a hot topic, especially as companies find themselves struggling to deal with aging equipment and the need to plan repair, renewal and replacement costs. In addition, regulatory bodies that have power over determining rates are looking more and more now for hard facts and cost predictions from companies with respect to capital and operational needs going 5, 10 or even 20 years into the future. PAS 55 is a British Standards Institute specification that addresses risk and optimization was raised as one of the benchmarks in asset management, designed to provide protection to all stakeholders.

OMDEC currently serves a growing Hydro utilities client base in Canada with projects that revolve around asset identification, maintenance costs, condition monitoring, and reliability plus failure prediction. As an example in the area of cost savings, an environmental project involving climatic conditions and wires is most interesting. Although Hydro Transmission and Distribution does have unique issues, as does Water/Waste Water and gas transmission, the well organized collection of hard maintenance data along with tapping and combining tacit knowledge from experienced workers is invaluable input for asset management tools, which are now mandatory to achieve accuracy in decision making.

On a final note, strong support from delegates and speakers addressed the fact that management has the obligation to assure that departments (financial, production, operations) not function in silos, rather work in harmony and share skills in order to optimise outcomes and provide best value for the company and client.

Note on terminology for our non-North American colleagues:  “hydro” in our lingo includes fossil power gen (coal, gas and oil), nuclear, wind and (yes!!) also hydro.  Plus transmission and distribution.
